Why does Spotify show different stream numbers than DistroKid?

Two dashboards can report different stream totals because they cover different date ranges, different stores, or measure different things (usage versus the accounting that gets paid). We cannot tell from outside which one explains yours. The quickest check is whether the DistroKid number is Spotify alone or every store combined.

The thread people point to

This is a common complaint. One Spotify Community thread is titled “Wrong stats Spotify or DistroKid”; a search summary says Spotify showed about 2,000 and DistroKid slightly above 4,000. We could not load the thread, so we cannot say what the reply was or whether anyone confirmed a cause. We mention it only to show the question is real and ordinary.

The checks, in order of how often they matter

  1. One store or all of them? A DistroKid figure can combine Spotify, Apple, Amazon, YouTube and more. Spotify’s own number is Spotify only. Compare like with like.
  2. Same dates? Different date windows, or different cut-off days, make two correct counts disagree.
  3. Usage or payment? A usage count and an accounting report from the store are separate systems, reported at different times. See stats versus earnings.
  4. Is it live data or a settled month? Recent days are often revised.

What your statement can settle

Your earnings statement lists units by store and month. Look at only the Spotify rows for a given month and compare that to Spotify’s number for the same month. If the Spotify rows add up to something close, the gap was store mixing. If they do not, take the specific months to support.

Open your own DistroKid statement here and see exactly how many units each store reported for each month, Spotify on its own — free, and it stays in your browser: https://musiciwant.com/musicians/distrokid

Sources and how far to trust them

Last checked October 15, 2026. Sources marked “read as a summary” are pages we could see only as a search-result summary because the page itself would not open for us; we have kept those claims general and not quoted numbers from them. Per-stream figures are estimates from the two dated articles named below; none of them are ours.
