In July 2020, with the world shut down, Taylor Swift released folklore with almost no warning — and it was nothing like the pop machine she’d perfected. Hushed, wintry, built with Aaron Dessner and Jack Antonoff, it traded stadium hooks for fiction: invented characters, a love triangle told across multiple songs, the feel of stories overheard rather than confessions delivered.

The pivot that paid off

cardigan, the lead single, set the tone — restrained, literary, sad in a grown-up way. The gamble worked: folklore won the Grammy for Album of the Year, and it permanently expanded what a Taylor Swift record could be. She proved she could drop the spectacle entirely and still hold the whole room.
