The loudness war is ending — and your nervous system won

Put on a CD from 1985 and one from 2008 at the same volume and you will notice something strange: the newer one sounds louder, even though the dial hasn't moved. That is not your imagination, and it is not a better recording. It is the loudness war — a thirty-year arms race in which records were mastered louder and louder to grab attention, and the cost was paid in something you can feel but rarely name: dynamic range.
What actually got crushed
Dynamic range is the distance between the quietest and loudest moments of a song. A drum hit that leaps out of a hush. A chorus that genuinely blooms after a restrained verse. That distance is what makes music feel alive — it is the sonic equivalent of light and shadow.
To make a track read as "loud" on the radio or a playlist, mastering engineers use heavy compression and limiting, which pull the quiet parts up and shove the loud parts down until everything sits near the ceiling. The result is a waveform that looks like a brick. The peaks survive but the breathing does not. The drum hit no longer leaps; it is already as loud as everything around it.
Why your nervous system notices
Loudness grabs attention — that is the entire point, and it works. But sustained, unrelenting loudness with no quiet to recover in is genuinely tiring. Several things happen at once:
- No rest. Quiet passages give your ears and your attention a place to settle. Remove them and the song becomes a continuous push with no give. Many people describe heavily compressed music as "exhausting" without knowing why — this is why.
- Blunted emotion. The thrill of a chorus comes partly from contrast with what preceded it. Flatten the contrast and you flatten the payoff. The song still works, but it lands softer than it should.
- Harder to listen quietly. Crushed masters are designed to sound full at high volume. Turn them down and detail collapses — so people turn them back up, and the cycle continues.
The twist for sensitive listeners
If you are sensitive to sound, you might assume low dynamic range is the enemy — and at high volume it can be. But there is a real upside: a compressed master has no sudden jolts. Nothing ambushes you. For someone who startles at an unexpected crash, a flat, predictable loudness can actually feel safer than a wide-dynamic recording where a quiet passage erupts without warning.
So it cuts both ways. Wide dynamic range is more beautiful and more alive, but it asks your body to ride its peaks and valleys. Narrow dynamic range is flatter and more fatiguing over time, but it is steady and free of surprises. Neither is "better." The right one depends on you, and on the day.
The good news
The war is quietly winding down. Streaming platforms now normalise loudness — they turn everything to roughly the same level on playback, which removes the incentive to crush a master just to seem louder than the next track. Slowly, dynamic range is being allowed back in.
