Old Town Road: The TikTok Hit That Forced a Reckoning Over Genre
By Dan Cohen · Published 2026-06-27
Old Town Road, Lil Nas X’s 2019 juggernaut, is a landmark for reasons far bigger than its catchiness. It began as an internet phenomenon — a country-trap hybrid built on an inexpensive online beat, propelled to virality through TikTok memes. Then it walked straight into one of the most consequential genre debates in modern music.
The chart that said no
Billboard removed the song from its Hot Country Songs chart, saying it didn’t embrace enough elements of country music. The decision was widely criticized as arbitrary — and, for many, as bound up with questions of who is allowed to make country music, and what a young Black artist’s record gets categorized as. The controversy turned a fun novelty into a real conversation about gatekeeping and race in genre.
The answer was the charts
Lil Nas X responded not with an argument but with dominance. A remix featuring country veteran Billy Ray Cyrus pointedly bridged the worlds, and the song went on to spend a record-breaking nineteen weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 — the longest run in the chart’s history at the time. A song told it wasn’t country enough became, simply, the biggest song there was.
What it measures like
On our measurements it’s bright and bouncy but deceptively laid-back — a short, mid-tempo groove that hooks fast and never overstays. Full profile on its song page.
