Good 4 U, from Olivia Rodrigo’s 2021 debut album Sour, is the furious counterpart to the wounded ballads that made her famous. Where her breakthrough was all teary specificity, this one bares its teeth: it’s a sarcastic, snarling kiss-off to an ex who seems to be doing perfectly fine — happy, unbothered, moving on with ease — while the narrator is quietly falling apart. “Good for you,” she sneers, meaning the opposite.

The rage stage of heartbreak

Its honesty is in capturing a very specific phase of a breakup: not the sadness but the bitter, jealous anger that comes from seeing someone you’re still hurting over appear completely unscathed. That feeling — the injustice of asymmetrical heartbreak — is rarely rendered so bluntly in a pop hit. It gives permission to be petty and furious, which can be its own kind of relief.
